APPEAL TO SUPPORT MIGRANT COMMUNITIES IN DIRE STRAITS IN SOUTH AFRICA

https://www.tawakul.org/adf/support-for-migrants

www.adf.org.za

• Dear Friend

Hundreds of migrants and their families find themselves in difficult circumstances arising from the Covid19 lockdown. The African Diaspora Forum (ADF), federation of migrant associations from 35 African countries including Pakistan and Bangladesh, has discovered in areas such as Yeoville, Hillbrow and Mayfair and in cities across the country migrants and their families in desperate need of food and toiletries.

Most of them worked as casual labourers or shop assistants in the service, retail and restaurant sectors and were summarily dismissed without further pay on March 26. With no income, they are struggling to survive during this lockdown period. As foreigners, they are also not eligible to apply to the UIF relief fund. The asylum seekers and those with refugee status are actually by law not allowed to seek formal employment.

The recent extension of the lockdown to level four has not eased their situation. Many will not be able to earn a living soon. Their dire situation was illustrated when the chairperson of the ADF did a radio interview in which he indicated the ADF was endeavouring to assist stricken families. He was immediately inundated with thousands of requests for assistance not only from migrants but also South Africans.

The ADF has identified hundreds of  migrant families in dire need and is making every effort to support them by providing food parcels. The food parcels, at a cost of about R300 each, contain basic groceries as follows:

Parcel Contents:

2 kg SELATI B/SUGAR

5 kg MARIANA W/RICE

1 kg SALT

10 kg PAPA M/MEAL

1 BOXE JOKO T/BAG 200’s

2 LUCKY STAR

1 HANDY ANDY

2 Liters OIL D’LITE

1 RAVE PURE SOAP

2 KOO BAKED BEANS
